Counter-Drone Technology
As drones become ubiquitous surveillance tools (law enforcement, military, commercial, hobbyist), counter-drone technology is emerging as a critical defense capability. Symvek is developing accessible counter-drone detection as part of our counter-surveillance mission.
Detection methods
RF detection: Drones communicate with controllers via radio frequency (typically 2.4 GHz or 5.8 GHz). RF sensors detect these transmissions and identify drone-controller communication.
Radar: Dedicated drone detection radar identifies the unique radar cross-section and movement patterns of multi-rotor and fixed-wing drones.
Acoustic detection: Drones produce distinctive sounds. Microphone arrays can detect, locate, and classify drones by their acoustic signature.
Visual/IR detection: Cameras with AI can identify drones against sky backgrounds. Thermal cameras detect drone motors.
SDR-based detection: Software-defined radios (like the $30 RTL-SDR) can monitor drone communication frequencies. This is the approach Symvek’s DroneWatch prototype uses.
Neutralization methods (restricted)
RF jamming: Disrupts the communication link between drone and controller. The drone typically returns to its launch point or lands. Illegal for civilians in most jurisdictions.
GPS spoofing: Feeds false GPS signals to the drone, causing it to fly to a different location. Highly illegal for civilians.
Net guns and interceptor drones: Physical capture systems. Some interceptor drones carry nets to capture target drones.
Directed energy: Military systems use high-powered microwave or laser to disable drones. Not available to civilians.
What civilians can legally do
In most jurisdictions, civilians can:
- Detect: Monitor RF frequencies for drone transmissions (passive reception is legal)
- Identify: Use acoustic or visual systems to identify drone presence
- Report: Notify authorities about unauthorized drone activity
- Document: Record evidence of drone surveillance
Civilians generally cannot:
- Jam drone communications
- Shoot down drones (federal crime in the US per FAA)
- Disable drones through any active countermeasure
What Symvek is building
DroneWatch uses an RTL-SDR dongle and software to detect common drone RF signatures. It’s passive detection, completely legal, providing awareness of drone activity in your area.
Combined with Sentinel’s fixed camera mapping, DroneWatch addresses the mobile aerial surveillance layer.
