What Is Sentinel?
Sentinel is an open surveillance camera map. Built by Symvek Technologies, it aggregates public data to map surveillance infrastructure across dozens of countries, covering 10 types of surveillance technology.
What it maps
- CCTV cameras: Fixed surveillance cameras on buildings, poles, and infrastructure
- ALPR (License Plate Readers): Cameras that scan and record every license plate
- Facial recognition: Cameras with facial recognition capability
- Speed cameras: Automated speed enforcement
- Red light cameras: Automated intersection enforcement
- ShotSpotter: Acoustic gunshot detection microphone arrays
- Drones: Police and government drone surveillance programs
- Body cameras: Police body-worn camera programs
- Cell-site simulators: Stingray devices that intercept phone communications
- Other: Additional surveillance technologies tracked by EFF
How it works
Sentinel aggregates data from 8+ public sources:
- OpenStreetMap: Community-mapped cameras worldwide
- EFF Atlas of Surveillance: US law enforcement technology tracking
- Government traffic APIs: Caltrans, TfL, DriveBC, 511 networks
- European speed camera databases: National road safety authorities
- Public records and FOIA: Government disclosures
- International open data portals: City and national camera registries
- Flock Safety deployments: ALPR community camera data
- Research publications: Academic surveillance studies
All data is from public sources. We don’t use scraping, hacking, or classified information.
How to use it
- Visit symvek.com/sentinel/map
- Search for your address or browse the map
- Toggle camera types to see specific surveillance
- Click cameras for details (type, operator, source, confidence)
- Use region presets for quick navigation (US, Europe, London, Seoul)
Privacy by design
Sentinel processes everything in your browser. We never know:
- Where you search
- What you look at
- Where you are
- Who you are
No accounts. No analytics. No tracking. The surveillance map that doesn’t surveil you.
Coming soon
- Sentinel Mobile: On-the-go surveillance awareness with real-time alerts
- Sentinel API: Structured data for researchers, journalists, and security teams
- Route scoring: Analyze surveillance exposure along any route
